BMS World Mission

Wonderful counsellors

17/09/2009

In Nepal, BMS World Mission supports 15 national Christians who are practically sharing the love of Jesus with people in need.

Indira and Bisnu are two of these supported partner workers. They are patient counsellors at a health clinic in Nepalgunj and the following story shows the wonderful way in which God is working through them, in this case by helping a man called Bhakta Tamata.

Bhakta Tamata had a troubled start to life. He worked from an early age without continuing his studies.

He married a Christian woman but suffered hatred from her family and, because he couldn’t find a job in Nepal, travelled alone to India in search of work.

Whilst in India, Bhakta became ill and was diagnosed with bone tuberculosis. He returned to Nepal, and to his wife, but they didn’t have any money for treatment.

Bhakta became slowly more disabled; he could not walk and there were deep wounds in the bones.

Surgery
The International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Surkhet came to know about Bhakta and sent him to their programme based in Nepalgunj, where he was started on medicines. It was here that Bhakta met Indira and Bisnu for the first time.

On the advice of INF doctors, Indira took him to a private clinic, where the orthopaedic surgeon said Bhakta required surgery but that a responsible person from his family was needed to care for him after the operation.

The procedure – which involved removing the TB abscess that was pushing on the spinal cord – was very serious and not a common procedure.

Still afraid of his wife’s parents, Bhakta wanted his father with him and Indira contacted him to persuade him to travel to Nepalgunj.
“Unknown friends”
Bhakta was admitted to a local government hospital where Indira’s colleague Bisnu looked after him.

Bisnu got Bhakta a free bed and free patient food, and visits him regularly, as does Indira. On one visit, Indira asked Bhakta how he was feeling. He was assured of getting new life and gave thanks to God for the provision for his treatment.

He gave thanks for the wonderful way God helped him meet his need through the “unknown friends” in such a time – while his relatives continued show no concern to him.

Bhakta’s surgery has since been completed and he is currently on three months of bed rest, with signs of some sensation returning. It is hoped that he can be transferred to INF’s rehab unit in Surkhet in due course.
Game playing
Please pray for Bhakta, and many others like him, recovering from illness – that God would bring healing and a fullness of life.

Thank God for the ministry of Indira and Bisnu and pray that they may be encouraged as they encourage others.
