BMS World Mission

Marriage supporting mission

16/03/2010

A couple from Exeter got married and had a rather unusual gift list - instead of toasters and towels, they asked guests to donate to BMS World Mission. Here the bride - Rita Painter - tells us why...

Darren and I had both been married before, have children from previous marriages and have been together for the past 18 months.

This meant that we had most of what we could possibly want for the house. People always seem to want to give a gift at a wedding, which of course is lovely, but we really didn't need anything.

We are exploring the idea of going into mission and therefore the good work of BMS is very much at the forefront of our minds.

It made sense that, if anyone did want to contribute something towards our day, then BMS would be a much better cause than anything we needed.

We explained our idea in our wedding invitations and enclosed a BMS leaflet. Many of our guests are not church-goers and did not know about BMS, but were aware of our hope to do mission work in the future.

The guests' reaction was generally very good with approximately £250 being raised, and even those who chose not to contribute have now been made aware of the work of BMS.
