Ignorance is not bliss – but the difference between life and death in Guinea, says BMS nurse Sarah HallThe United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are an attempt by the world to bring more equality into aspects of life that those of us from the West take for granted. The 2007 MDGs report states: “Each year, more than 500,000 women die from treatable or preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth. In sub-Saharan Africa, a woman’s risk of dying from such complications over the course of her lifetime is one in 16 compared to one in 3,800 in the developed world.”
