Transforming lives on four continents

Every dog has its day

Posted by Cynthia and Ian Chadwell at 13:27 on 27th October 2011

In Nepal, we are just about to celebrate Tihar (or Deepwali as it is sometimes called). There are a number of festival days but today is the day when dogs are worshipped and given tika and garlands of flowers.

Normally, most dogs are not treated that well, certainly the street dogs, so the sudden attention must come as a shock.

Pari, our landlord’s dog, had been garlanded and tika-ed by the time the children came home from school. We thought you’d like to see a picture.

The Festival of Lights is tomorrow and the children are off school on Friday. A number of churches will have special programmes during this week.

Pray that these would go well and that new believers would be supported by their congregations as this is a purely family holiday but with lots of Hindu worship thrown in.

Picture speaks thousand words.

When I opened this page and saw the picture it just reflected that the dog's owner is Hindu. And, look if I am unable to read the text the child who is holding the dog is certainly an owner for me.

In Nepal, people has a concept that white people either from America, Australia, Europe or from any other country are Christian. People try to compare the Christian from outside of the country to the inside. And, since the concept has not been changed yet, even the new believer look at them.

Finally I would like to end saying that this information is some short of meaningless to me, I do not know may be it is very much informative to other community. It is correct that Dog is VIP on that day but in actual it is worshiped because Dog is the messenger of a Hindu God called Yamraj, a God of Death.

Beside that one important fact is that it is believe that dog guards the door of Heaven and pleasing them allow them to enter the Heaven after death.
