REV GLADYS MAY SMITH (nee SEYMOUR)  (1919 – 2009)
CHINA (1948 – 1951) and INDIA (1952 – 1962)

Rev Gladys May Smith (nee Seymour) died on Tuesday 20 October 2009. Gladys served with BMS as a teacher in China from 1948 to 1951 and as the principal of a teacher training college in Cuttack, India, from 1952 to 1962.

After Gladys returned to the UK she studied for the Baptist ministry and was ordained in 1966 and enjoyed five years in Markyate. She later became the Free Church minister at the Ecumenical Church at Bar Hill where she met and married Eric Smith, a local Methodist minister in 1981. They both enjoyed their ministry together, leading worship locally and acting as chaplains. Gladys also continued teaching New Testament Greek to students in preparation for their theology degree.

We give thanks for Gladys’ long life, her commitment and witness to Christ through her work for BMS overseas and in the UK.
