Transforming lives on four continents

Update on Mudslides in Rio and on Space to Fly

Posted by Mark and Suzana Greenwood at 15:02 on 2nd February 2011

The situation in the mountains is that enough donations have been given for people to have enough supplies for a while, except in a few cases, where further donations are being directed by the Baptist National Home Mission Board. They have been visiting all the churches which are in affected communties to evaluate what rebuilding work is needed, and will be meeting in the next few days to see how to proceed. There is still a need for volunteers for technical and hands on help, as well as medical and counselling aid. The victim count seem to have stopped at just over 800 dead and just over 500 missing, but there are stories of many more unaccounted for, as some villages were simply buried.

We have not been directly involved over the last couple of weeks because of working at the Brazilian Baptist AAssembly, but imagine we will be helping with the project design for rebuilding, and also visiting the churches working with the families affected.

As you will have seen, Space to Fly is going well in Ceará. Suzana has a launch planned for the Rio area next week, with the first training event set for Friday and Saturday.

We will continue to pray for all those involved, those affected and those trying to help for months to come.
